The New Zealand Energy Excellence Awards were created by Freeman, publishers of digital news and information service Energy News, in 2010. The industry's premier black-tie gala event is attended at an influencer and decision-maker level, providing an ideal vehicle for networking and branding your organisation as one that recognises and pursues excellence.​​

Award categories are reviewed each year and updated when necessary to ensure they are relevant and reflect the aspirational goals of the sector. A diverse judging panel of industry experts review each entry thoroughly, seeking those that can demonstrate significant positive impact.​​

In 2023, nearly 700 sector participants attended the Awards evening, held at Te Pae Christchurch Convention Centre.
