New Zealand Steel – New Zealand Steel Electric Arc Furnace – securing the future of steel making, a strategic asset for NZ

2026

New Zealand Steel's Electric Arc Furnace project is the largest single-site industrial decarbonisation investment in New Zealand's history. The NZ$300 million initiative, cofunded with the New Zealand Government, replaces half of the traditional coal-intensive steelmaking at Glenbrook with an EAF powered from New Zealand’s highly renewable grid, backed by Contact Energy. Once operational in 2026, it will eliminate up to 1,000,000 tonnes of CO₂e per year - 1% of New Zealand's total emissions, by halving coal use and utilising New Zealand's scrap steel onshore. This positions NZ Steel as a benchmark for lower-carbon integrated steelmaking, securing Glenbrook's future for generations.
