KiwiRail has delivered a major shunting fleet decarbonisation initiative by transitioning from ageing diesel assets to electric and hybrid alternatives. Over eight years, KiwiRail has procured 27 fully electric light and heavy shunt vehicles and 24 hybrid shunt locomotives. Once delivered, 65% of KiwiRail’s shunting fleet will be electric or hybrid powered, avoiding an estimated 776 tonnes of CO₂e per year. The initiative improves energy efficiency, reduces diesel use, lowers maintenance
complexity, strengthens safety outcomes, reduces local air and noise impacts, and supports lower-emission freight services for New Zealand.
