BraveTrace operates the New Zealand Energy Certificate System (NZECS), a digital registry that issues and redeems New Zealand Energy Certificates (NZ-ECs) so organisations can credibly prove renewable energy use and reduce Scope 2 emissions risk. Each NZ-EC represents 1 MWh from verified generation and is redeemed on use to prevent double counting, strengthening system integrity through Residual Supply Mix accounting. NZECS has scaled as a market-driven initiative over the past 2–3 years, helping 400+ energy users and redeeming 2.16m NZ-ECs in 2024/25 (5.2% of NZ generation), while supporting investment signals for new renewable build and repowering.
