David Binnie

Independent Director

David Binnie is an Independent Director and experienced energy sector leader with more than three decades of international and New Zealand experience spanning energy supply, renewable fuels, hydrogen, power generation and decarbonisation.

His most recent executive role was as General Manager Biofuels at Genesis Energy, where he led the development of commercial-scale biomass supply chains to support the decarbonisation of thermal electricity generation. Prior to Genesis, David led the energy portfolio for Tūaropaki Trust, where he was at the forefront of developing a green hydrogen business. As Head of Supply at Z Energy, he managed the integration of Chevron New Zealand’s supply assets into Z and oversaw the commissioning of New Zealand’s first commercial-scale biofuels plant.

Before moving to New Zealand in 2011, David spent 25 years with BP in global business development roles and subsequently led Petroleum and Minerals development for the New Zealand Government.

David’s commitment to low-carbon energy began in 2006 when he led BP’s Hydrogen Power project in Abu Dhabi. Since then, he has been a passionate advocate for accelerating the energy transition through innovation, strategic partnerships and effective collaboration between industry and government. He believes the private sector has a unique role to play in developing practical solutions that enable a rapid and equitable transition to a low-carbon future.
“The skills, technologies and expertise needed to transition from hydrocarbon-based energy systems to low-carbon alternatives already exist,” says David. “The challenge is to apply them at scale to the ideas and projects that matter most. The New Zealand Energy Excellence Awards provide a unique opportunity to recognise and celebrate the people and organisations turning those ideas into reality.”
