Transpower and The Solar Tsunamis Endeavour Programme’s space weather preparation has turned a national risk into a proven resilience capability for New Zealand. By combining science, engineering, emergency management and communication, they have built one of the world’s most advanced approaches to managing solar storms. The programme has been tested during major events, protecting grid assets without disrupting electricity supply. Through technical innovation, sector-wide collaboration and coordinated planning, this work has strengthened energy resilience, improved public preparedness and positioned New Zealand as a leader in translating space weather science into action to protect New Zealand in a low-probability, potentially catastrophic event.
