Biogas recovery system

Dairy shed effluent has long been regarded as being too dilute to be suitable for biogas production.  At Glenarlea Farms biogas has been successfully produced from dairy shed effluent from 900 cows and used to produce electricity and hot water.

In the spring of 2016 the generator was run up to 16 hours per day to keep up with the gas production.  The generator produced 30 kW electrical power and the motor 60 kW hot water for each hour it ran.

The project involved collaboration from The Fortuna Group, owner of Glenarlea Farms, Dairy Green Ltd, NIWA, EECA and Venture Southland.
