Pushing boundaries

Pushing the Boundaries – Building an electrical substation in an inner-city residential Zone.

Substations are not usually located in inner-city residential zones. This PowerNet project to build a state-of-the-art substation in  Invercargill’s inner-city, residential zone overcame the inherent technical challenges through innovation and meticulous planning, backed by a strong community relations programme.

The technical challenges related to substation design and consent requirements for an urban area. Factors such as combatting noise and heat emissions, the need for an architectural design that blended in with the surrounds, effective transformer design and the ability to install equipment at a compact, enclosed site, were all successfully addressed. The result is an excellent and enduring outcome for Invercargill City.
