AWARDS FINALIST: Westpower/ElectroNet – Where well-being thrives

2 Jul 2025

In a sector where talent retention and engagement are critical, Westpower and the ElectroNet Group have taken a bold approach to workplace well-being.

They have developed a suite of initiatives employees can draw on to best meet their well-being and career interests as they see them, and to fit their work and life priorities as they evolve over time.

The latest element of the package - freshly introduced ElectroNet Coach - will allow employees to be paired with experienced mentors to gain career guidance and skills development. The firm says this expanded initiative is also a conduit for knowledge transfer within the business.

The Well-being Ecosystem was built from the ground up, based on feedback from the entire Westpower/ElectroNet team about what was important to them.

Personal

Westpower says the message was clear: well-being is personal, and support must adapt to life's changing stages. The result is a comprehensive programme that lets individuals choose what works for them - whether that's flexible hours, financial benefits or career development.

The ecosystem now comprises four core programmes:

  • ElectroNet Flex offers genuine work-life balance, allowing employees to adjust hours, work remotely or take extended leave for personal development or family needs.
  • ElectroNet Plus is a tenure-based benefit menu where employees can select from options like extra income, superannuation contributions or additional leave - customisable every year. "It's like an app-store for well-being."
  • ElectroNet Experience provides opportunities to try new roles within the business, including temporarily moving to one or other of the group's seven locations to try them out.
  • ElectroNet Coach provides mentorship and skill-building to foster personal and professional growth.

Physical and financial well-being are also prioritised. Employees enjoy access to the MoveSpring fitness app, discounted bikes through the WorkRide scheme and generous fuel discounts - used by 95 per cent of staff - as well as free health checks and discounted health insurance.

Impact

The impact has been remarkable. The group's employee Net Promoter Score hit a record plus-52, and participation in key initiatives is near-universal. Every eligible employee has engaged with ElectroNet Plus, and up to 75 per cent regularly join fitness challenges. The programme has been described internally as "ingenious" - a testament to its relevance and resonance.

Westpower says that, contrary to popular belief, well-being is about more than just one's mental state or physical health.

It says the ecosystem aligns closely with the PERMA-V model of well-being to address positivity, engagement, relationships, meaning, achievement and vitality.

Looking ahead, Westpower and ElectroNet say they are committed to evolving the ecosystem alongside their people.

By listening, adapting and investing in what truly matters to them, they will build a better workplace and ensure that employees feel supported, valued and empowered.

The annual Energy Excellence Awards will be held in Wellington on 13 August. The Well-being Award is sponsored by Hiko Energy Insights.
