Helping K?kako sing again in Taranaki

A partnership between Shell NZ and the Tiaki te Mauri o Parininihi Trust has reached its first milestone – kōkako can be heard once again in Taranaki.  Facing extinction in Taranaki due to its many predators, the last remaining kōkako, Tamanui, was removed to a breeding colony while the Trust, supported by Shell NZ, embarked on an intensive pest control project so that Tamanui’s progeny could return home.  While the project continues, the first of the kōkako was released in late May.  Shell and its staff embraced the challenge at many levels and now leave a legacy, supporting cultural, environmental and economic benefits for generations to come.
