Future proofing the lower South Island grid for new generation and supply
Transpower’s Clutha Upper Waitaki Line Project delivered in 20 months an upgrade of the national grid that would have usually taken several summers.
Teams from Transpower, Electrix, ElectroNet and Ventia worked to future proof the lower South Island grid in a fast-tracked process that almost doubled the transmission capacity out of Otago and Southland. And they relied on a combination of careful planning and agile thinking to overcome challenges posed by remote, hard to access terrain, extreme weather conditions, land restrictions, supply issues and Covid-19 constraints.
