OMV – Restoring the Māui Field

2022
Rejuvenating ageing gas fields to secure energy supply

OMV New Zealand deployed world-leading technologies as part of its eight-well campaign to restore production from the Māui gas field and ensure ongoing output until at least the end of the decade. The 4D seismic survey undertaken to find pockets of bypassed gas and condensate was the largest ever in New Zealand, while the technology deployed to enable precision geo-steering of the wells into the field’s narrow crestal zones was also a first for the country.

Despite the challenges of Covid-19 and a highly technical repair required on an existing well casing, the project was completed within budget and last year saw OMV almost double the production from the Maui field and increase the expected recoverable reserves at Māui by 170 petajoules.
