McCain Foods – Pulse Electrified Field

PEF technology reduces coal, electricity and water usage

McCain Foods’ pulsed electric field technology is helping the world’s leading producer of prepared potato products achieve its goal of a 25 per cent reduction in CO2 emissions by 2030.

A project to install the technology at its Timaru plant came in under budget and produced an impressive reduction in water consumption as well as cutting coal consumption and carbon emissions. Cost savings of more than $1 million a year easily beat expectations.

Although the technology is McCain’s, it could be replicated across other processing industries to the benefit of the country as a whole.
